The term ‘Smart Society’ encompasses several areas including smart city, smart governance, smart mobility and smart environment. All these perspectives are central to developing societies that are both sustainable and connected in a smart way. It is estimated that by 2050 two-thirds of the world population will live in urban areas, a trend which prompted the United Nations to establish ‘Sustainable Cities’ as one of their Sustainable Development Goals (i.e. SDG 11). Furthermore, the topic of urbanisation impacts several other SDGs (e.g. 1, 6, 8 et al.) and therefore must be considered as one of the key drivers of change in a sustainable transformation. 

A value chain built on AI and Big Data is a key enabler in the twin transition, requested by the Green Deal, towards a digital and green Europe, supporting the required systemic and cross-sectorial complexity of the addressed phenomena. 

The Smart Society track explores how cities are getting ready for a massive integration of AI and Big Data technologies to address their needs and how AI and Big Data can support local transitions towards a circular economy 

The track is split into two main subject areas: 

  1. "Smart City – challenges and good practices" - How are cities implementing AI and Big Data projects locally? How are cities pushing forward innovation in that field?  Which are the most promising models? Use cases across Europe will be shared: What are the success criteria for creating smart city applications? The question of public funding is examined as well as the difference in creating industry applications.


  2. “AI and Big Data for a Circular Economy” - The second subject area showcases examples of Circular Economy initiatives across Europe that integrate AI and Big Data solutions. The examples are drawn both from an urban and rural context.
